Cashews and Skydiving Queens

Whoa, this is literally the first time I’ve done something on the computer besides college work all week.

Friends, I’ve been in a chemistry cave. I have a test this coming Monday, another on Thursday, and the final ACS National exam on the 10th. OY VEY. BUTTTTTT it’s only 2. MORE. WEEKS.

Anywho, let’s stop talking about chem and get onto some fun!

If you follow me on instagram (@zandra0212), then you probably already saw this gloriousness last night…

Well, while I was watching the queen leap from a plane during last night’s Olympic opening ceremonies, I decided to whip out the food processor, grab a bag of raw cashews and make my own cashew butter!

We recently bought a new food processor since it was on sale at Target for $20 and the fact that our 20 year old mini Cuisinart smelled like fire and burnt hair whenever we used it…

Prior to this, I’d only ever made pistachio butter. (Last year for Christmas, I made some for my mom :) ) So I was excited to give cashew butta a try! AND a lazy kitchen bum like myself loves just pressing a button and PRESTO getting creamy, cashewy goodness haha

Soak cashews for an hour in water. Drain water off in a collander. Load into processor.

Blend until creamy and jar it up! Easy peasy! :D

Easiest recipe ever. And it tastes AMAZING on my homemade paleo bread. I’m addicted!

I really REALLY want to get some brazil nuts and try to blend them up…maybe even add in some different extracts for flavors??? AHH so many possibilities!!! :D When this chem class is over, I can’t wait to experiment some more mwahaha

Well, I shall now return to my study-cave-psycho-girl ways…after I catch up on some blog reading and Olympic watching though haha ;) Hope everyone has a grand weekend!

What’s your favorite kind of nut butter? Have you ever made your own?

Favorite Olympics event? (I think mine’s swimming or the 100 meter sprints!)

  1. Cashew butter does not get enough recognition IMHO- it seems to be aaall about the peanut or almond normally- but cashew rocks! I buy it all the time, so neat you made it yourself though, I bet it tastes supa fresh.
OH! I wanted to tell you( because I’m sure you care:p) I made your high fibre almond bread ( eventually!) In little muffin form. T’was DELISH. I tried it with both sweet and savoury toppings- and concluded that in fact, both are awesome, but savoury had a slight edge- think turkey like you suggested , and cheese. Yum.

Good luck with your upcoming chem exams(rather you than me:p)!
    Xxx

    • Awesome!!!! I’m so so stoked it worked in muffin form :) Now I definitely have to try it in a savory way– I’ve yet to put turkey on it, but I have a feeling that’ll be changing asap! And thanks for the good luck wishes! :)

  2. That cashew butter looks great! I need a new food processor, because every time I try to use ours, it makes the worst sounds and smells like burnt plastic– obviously a bad sign! ;)

I never knew that you had to soak your nuts a while before processing them! That’s good to know, because I tried making almond butter before, and I kept wondering what I did wrong. lol :D

Do you also soak roasted nuts before processing them, though? Have you ever done roasted nut butters? Thanks in advance!

    • Hahaha that’s exactly what my old one smelled like too!! It was gnarly!
I’ve heard you can presoak roasted nuts, but I think it’s more of an optional thing whereas I think it’s necessary with raw nuts. I’ve never tried using flavored or roasted nuts in homemade butters though, I bet they’d work amazing :) I’ve seen lots of online recipes for them, so if I ever try one, I’ll definitely let you know :D
Hope you have a great weekend and lemme know how the presoaking goes with your almond butter!

  3. hey! so I’ve been reading for a while but never commented, not sure why I haven’t but I love the blog! and I can totally relate to the “black hole” thing…I took organic 1 and 2 this summer too – oh so fun (not). but you’re so close to being done and think how great it’s going to be not having to take it next year! we did the acs exam for a final too (I just finished thursday) just think how great its going to be when you’re done! plus the olympics will make fabulous study breaks :) haha I kind of love the Olympics. sorry that was probably the most random scattered comment ever, enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

    • Hey girl!!! Oh man you have no idea how great it felt to read your comment– knowing it’s possible to pass o chem hell AND survive the acs final just made my day! :) I cannot wait to be in your shoes in two weeks haha Thanks so much for the support!
Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend too! Enjoy letting your brain relax and mush out with no chem haha! :D

      • ah I’m so glad! yeah it was nice reading about someone who was going through the same thing as I was with o chem! I don’t need to tell you how great it is to be done and how close you are…wishing you the best last few weeks and then we can celebrate together :)

  4. I LOVE making nut butters… I don’t do it near enough, but it is quite a fun hobby to get into. Favorite flavor: (make this around Christmas time.) roast a bunch of almonds lightly drizzled with stevia and maple syrup in the oven. Take out and put into a food processor… blend until you have a little taste of heaven in a bowl :)

  5. I love making my own nut butter.. I do it almost every week! If you ever add honey (super good), make sure to add it before it butterizes because if you don’t it freezes up and you have to reblend. I love to add anything and everything to it.. It makes it more fun! :)

  6. gahhh I love making my own nut butter (with nuts grown out of a shaman’s garden, obviously haha), but it takes me forever with my food processer!! Although I never thought to soak them first, I gotta try that. Brazil nut butter would be crazy! I wanna try macadamia nut butter next I think!

  7. I have o-chem starting in the fall. I am scared.
Cashew butter sounds great! I’ve only ever had sesame, peanut,or almond butter and nutella(does that count?).

  8. love the cashew butter! i made nut butters for family this past christmas and my processor was in over drive! :) i just bought some macadamia nuts and may whip up some butter soon + some coconut butter! yummo!
good luck on your tests coming up!

  9. I’ve never made nut butter because because I’m not sure if my 25 year old Cuisinart one can handle it! I’m scared of breaking it! :P My favourite kind of nut butter is soy butter… it doesn’t come in a lot of cool flavours though, so I would love to make my own and experiment. Maple cinnamon soy butter would be delicious!

Good luck with your school work girl! :)

  10. You seriously made me laugh out loud because you said your old food processor smelled like fire and burnt hair. HAHAHA.

Anywho, you cashew butter looks GREAT! You are soo close to being done with classes! I’m going to say a prayer for you right now :)

  11. Yum! I’ve never made my own nut butter, but I really want to try! I think I need to get a decent food processor first though — my old Magic Bullet probably won’t cut it. I love the swim sprints in the olympics too!! I also LOVE volleyball. I’ve been watching nonstop!

  12. Is cashew butter not the best nut butter ever!!
I am SO obsessed with that stuff. So creamy and delicious.
I actually haven’t made my own nut butter yet. I think I need to change that ASAP!
Good luck with the rest of chem! Almost done!!!

  13. Cashew is pretty much the only nut butter I haven’t tried, it looks so creamy…almost like ice cream!
I was going to email you with a question but couldn’t find your email! I know you’re pretty open about your faith on the blog, and was wondering how do you fit God and fitness together? Lately I’ve been feeling super guilty about working out/focusing alot of my time and energy on preparing good food and I can’t figure out how to glorify God inthat…any tips?

    • Oh man I totally know what you mean! It’s hard balancing school work, gym time, hobbies, and still finding time to fit in “God time.” Heck, I’ve had a hard time just balancing it with taking this horrible Ochem class (that’s the reason for my late reply lol). But, I kinda think by eating right and living healthy, we’re glorifying Him because we’re nurturing our “temples.” You know what I mean? It may not be a blatant form of glorifying Him, but I guess it still counts! :D Hope that helped!! I think it’s awesome you have such a great relationship with God, truly awe-inspiring! :)

  14. Oh wow, that most certainly IS gloriousness! I’m in nut butter heaven just looking at your pictures! Cashew butter is one of my favorites–it has a natural sweetness that the other nut butters lack, which means no salt or sugar necessary! I need to woman up and make myself a batch instead of dropping the big bucks on jars every couple of weeks!

Good luck on your test today!! Sending chem conquering vibes your way. <3 <3 <3

  15. Peanut butter is my fave, but I’ll take cashew if it walks by ;) I’ve tried making my own butters, but my blender is one of those burnt-smelling, dull-bladed, weak-to-begin with blenders, and it just complains and then hands me roughly chopped nuts.
